Depression can be very draining.  Often the words just aren’t there as you try to navigate the dark cavern in your mind.

DarknessAs I stated in an earlier post, I have been battling depression, so I know first-hand how it can drain you so completely, you are physically unable to form the words to say to others let alone to God, to  whom you should be turning.

My pit had gotten so dark and so deep that I didn’t know which way was even up.  I couldn’t even see the light.  I kept asking, “God, where are you.  I don’t see you.  I can’t feel you.  I can’t hear you.”  After awhile the darkness had permeated my brain so much that forming a complete thought was impossible. Pray to God?  I didn’t know where to start.

I decided to help both myself and others, I would share a list of verses to help you pray when you just can’t seem to come up with a prayer on your own prayers. Praying the scripture is a tool I have used before.  There is power in praying His word.

Here are fifteen scriptures that I hope help you.

“You, Lord, are my lamp; You turn my darkness into light.” 2 Samuel 22:29

“Answer me quickly, O Lord, my spirit fails; Do not hide Your face from me, Or I will become like those who go down to the pit. Let me hear Your loving-kindness in the morning; For I trust in You; Teach me the way in which I should walk; For to You I lift up my soul.”  Psalm 143:7-8

“Lord, You are the one who goes ahead of me; You will be with me. You will not fail me or forsake me. I will not fear or be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8

“Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but Your steadfast love surrounds me because I trust in You.” Psalms 32:10

“I will trust in You, O LORD, and do good; I will dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. I delight myself in You, and You will give me the desires of my heart.” Psalms 37:3-4

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? I hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”  Psalm 42:11

“Father, I cast all my care upon him; for you care for me.”  1 Peter 5:7

“Heavenly Father, I know you have told me things so that I can have peace because in this world I will have many troubles but I can have hope for You have overcome the world.” John 16:33

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate me from the Your love.”  Romans 8:38-39

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts me in all my affliction, so that I may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which I am comforted by God.”  2 Corinthians 1:3-4

“You, Lord, are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light.” 1 Samuel 22:29

“You, O  Lord, are a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” Psalm 9:9

“You make firm the steps of me because I delights in You;  though I may stumble, You will not fall, for You uphold me with Your hand.” Psalm 37:23-24

“I will not fear, for You are with me; do not be dismayed, for You are my God.  You strengthen me and help me;  You will uphold me with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

  1. Thank you for sharing this and for being transparent. Depression is so often misunderstood(even in the church).
Thank you for the verses. In those dark times, I find that I have to hold on to what I know is true and cannot trust my feelings.
