HOW GREAT THOU ART

This is one of my favorite renditions of this song: Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill.  It is one of those songs that makes you cry.  I just wish she would do more gospel. How Great Thou Art is a timeless hymn that still resonates in 2015.

“How Great Thou Art” is based on a  poem written by Swedish pastor Carl Gustav Boberg  in 1885. It was translated into German and then Russian where it became a hymn. It was translated into English by British missionary Stuart K. Hine, who also added two original verses of his own. The composition was set to the Russian melody. Notably all English versions (a Johnny Cash live performance excluded) are made in a slower pace, different from the uptempo Swedish original.

     How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the *worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the *rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Refrain

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

Refrain

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

Refrain

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then *I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, My God, how great thou art!
