To Merry Christmas or To Happy Holiday….That Is The Question!

8580304_orig     First I want to start out by saying that I do believe this holiday is about Christmas.  I do not like it when places say you have to say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”.  However…….

I think some on the Merry Christmas “team” also take things to such a ridiculous extreme that they are actually making Christmas look bad.  Recently I saw a post on a Facebook page thanking the local fire company and another company for hanging up the holiday lights.  I thought, “Oh, that’s nice. They’re thanking them for serving the community.”  However another citizen chose to attack them for calling them holiday lights and I thought, “Really? Seriously?  These people were trying to be nice and thank someone for doing something and you are putting them down for calling them holiday lights?”  I am sure when they typed up the Thank You, what type of lights they were called was the last thing on their mind.  They were just exercising good manners.  When I replied saying they were just trying to be nice and that thread shouldn’t even be debated that person proceeded to get nasty about it.  Since I was a kid, Christmas has always been a holiday.  I mean, think about it….”Happy Holiday” (sometimes performed as “Happy Holidays”) was composed by Irving Berlin during 1941.  No one debated back then that they were not talking about Christmas.  “There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays” was written by Robert Allen and Al Stillman in 1954.  There was no argument about whether that song meant Christmas.  After all, Christmas IS a holiday.  Christmas is THE holiday.  Saying you can’t say “holiday” is as bad as those who say you can’t say “Christmas”.    When I sing these songs, I am not thinking of Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or whatever.  No, I am thinking about Christmas.  Instead of yelling about how people call it holiday instead of Christmas, we should instead be showing people what is so special about Christmas….. you know; all that peace on earth- good will toward men stuff.  If it is Christmas, it should be about Christ.  Who is going to want to even listen to someone about Christ when someone is screaming about what it is called.  Pick your battles.  Isn’t it better to win the war and not this particular battle?  Something to think about.
